"LITTLE LIGHT CONVERSATIONS" by Nathalie Schaar

ART BASEL WEEK December 3-9,2015

...talks about those little conversations we carry in our phones anytime anywhere. My work is an imaginary track of those dialogs that disappear, buried under new lines, every day. Relating our lives, relating us, a little, a lot, or madly, in some few shared words…

Espitia Gallery Presents: Artist GusColors

GusColors is a completely self-taught, modern pop artist based in Miami, FL. He was born in San Pedro Sula, Honduras and raised in Nicaragua by both Mexican and Nicaraguan parents. In 2000, GusColors moved to Miami to pursue his passion of an artistic career. Miami turned out to be the perfect destination point for him, as he currently lives and paints here.

Artist GusColors has embraced the energetic and vibrant culture surrounding him, and finds inspiration in Miami’s heat and extravagant lifestyle. "I dream in paint. My subconscious is actively working, creating from my inner-mind." His acrylic on canvas work explores a playful yet rambunctious side of everyday life. The artist’s use of bright colors and innocent but mischievous characters explode through the surface of each canvas, and enables a fresh point of view. His art is intense with a dramatic attention to detail.

2015 looks promising for GusColors. “I’m thankful for the opportunities given to me that have allowed me to create a buzz in South Florida. I want to continue to focus on perfecting my technique that will take it to the next level. I’m definitely excited to do what it takes to develop into a more successful artist.” This year GusColors wants to reach out to larger audiences and tackle bigger projects. “People come to Miami to frolic in the sun, enjoy the nightlife, and experience all the top-notch attractions. I want to continue to capture that energy so that people can experience it at another, more personal level.” With that being said, Gus will remain in Miami to live and paint, and will explore more national and international options.

Rafael Espitia Interview by Art Tour International 2015.

www.arttourinternational.com

Which series will you be exhibiting as of December 5th in Miami and where will you be?
This time around, I will be participating in my Wynwood gallery, known as Espitia Gallery, with two exhibits from my Crash series. The central theme of this series is the weakness of us humans in perceiving the world according to gene-based predeterminations and also according to the experiences we have lived through, and thus, our actions are based on an unconscious mindset that forces us to “live in the past”. In life, there are two reasonable viewpoints which, upon their encounter, cause for a collision giving rise to a victim, who is a third party. The first exhibit is an example of the fact that our perception of things changes after every glance, which is reflected by my work through The Musicians, which is the product of an optical illusion created from the placement of toys scattered on the floor, which, when arranged in a certain way, lead the unconscious mind to recreate certain musical legends. The second exhibit, Caribbean, reiterates our errors in the way we think about the world. How Come? Something as simple as a pair of eyeglasses, through which we see things, if they are not the right ones for us, could cause us to perceive a reality that does not exist. This is a pretense to play around with the illusion of a nonexistent 3D reality.

What are some words of inspiration you could give to young artists trying to pave their way in this industry?
First of all, I’d like to congratulate everyone who has devoted themselves to this wonderful work and I’d reiterate to them in the arts they’ll find everything they need to be happy and have a life filled with many emotions and joys despite being constantly beset by difficulties. I would tell them that, while one needs to pursue goals and objectives in the short and long term, they should know that the best thing about this work is to enjoy the excitement of the day to-day art, and that, in the end, the road is more enjoyable than the goal per se. I would tell them to work on their art every single day and not be sidetracked by other activities on the pretext that art is unprofitable. They should sell their talent, even if at first it may not be so well paid. Hence, surely someday many will see how wonderful their work is; there will be people prying art pieces from the artists’ hands, because good art seduces and requires being possessed....anything aside from that is just an added perk.

What is inspiration in your own words?
I know that inspiration is not something that comes to us while we are doing something else, it is something that simply fulfills you, excites you and finds you while you are working; from there on, that force will never let you give up on the work you’re creating. You will only get inspired once your mind becomes creative, which is not to be confused with the mere desire to work on art. The creative minds of those who are inspired, unwittingly and by dint of toil and daily work, gets riddled with a flow of numerous and different ideas. Their mind becomes a machine that spawns such wonderful ideas that the only work left to be done is to choose and enjoy.

Give us your website and blogs so that our readers can get to see more of your work.

Your work is not restricted to paintings, could you talk to us about your other work and 3D sculptures?
All my current work revolves around my Crash universe; I perform such work in a large variety of materials. If we engage in this universe, we will find works ranging from traditional paintings, acrylic on canvas, to sculptures and paintings made from recycled materials, creating optical illusions belonging to a universe where our eyes deceive us, our brain limits us and only see what we want to see.
I have two studios, one in Miami and the other in my city, Cartagena. In Colombia I do my work, trying to be consistent with the issue of falling prey to modern changes, and engaging in a proper performance for Crash, with 11 recycling boys who help me get materials and also get to help out with my work. I have met wonderful people from whom I have learned a lot. Thanks to them, I have made pieces out of recycled toys, books, CDs and video films, plus a bunch of cassettes and all kinds of items which, due to the fat that they fell "prey" to the collision and were knocked out of circulation, are now used for works of art that makes us see what is nonexistent.
On the subject of 3D, I’m still digging deep into the knowledge of color and their properties for travelling all at the same speed but at a different wavelength which, through lens filters, makes it easier for me to enhance the illusions. This world has opened up many scenarios for me with the admirers of my work, it’s helped them enjoy a trip of overlapping planes through a method that’s very different from the one used in 3D cinema.

Artwork by JHON SERRANO (Colombia).

ART BASEL WEEK 2014

Wynwood Art District
December 2014

Seasons / Digital Illustration / 116 x 44 inches

This artwork started out as a photograph, like almost all my art. After working on it digitally, I came up with the base for it: to illustrate the different treatments and colors for the same simple tree, using panels. Then I added some elements of nature and textures I use. The moon, the sun, the bird and the leave, served as an excuse to make a sort of representation of the 4 seasons. But it's also about moods, or the different approaches you can get to from the same start, idea, thing or photograph. It's about repetition and multiple image, like the cycles of nature.

If passion and determination met at an art exhibition and hit it off they would give birth to an Artist by the name of Ariel Ortega

PASSION FOR ART, ARIEL ORTEGA.

Born in Nicaragua and raised in Miami, Ortega was very fortunate in having a better life in the United States. Brought up by immigrant parents working factory jobs to make ends meet, Ortega found himself needing to help with the bills and started working at a very early age. Unable to pay for an art degree, but having a deep passion for art, Ortega pursued a career in art despite his lack of educational training.

Equilibrium / 10 feet by 10 feet / foam mounted on wall

Even still he ventured into starting a business without any business background. Taking a leap of faith with the hopes of flying, he built wings in mid air, and so began his artistic career. Painting murals and creating artistic faux designs, he learned the colors of the palette, different mediums, and different techniques of painting. Though it's been a rough 10 years full of ups and downs for the young entrepreneur, passion and determination once again prevailed. His reputation has opened doors for him to work on projects with some of the most renounced celebrity's and Designers in Miami. These days Ortega has shifted his work from contracts to expressions of art on MDF boards. Through his unique formula of mixed medias, he shines light on subjects related to immorality, injustice and self worth often inspired by Biblical context. Other pieces of his work simply bring a positive energy to the ambient. "My place of birth is known mostly for being one of the poorest countries in the Americas. Unable to detach myself from that history I use it as a driving force to work harder, and if through that I can bring inspiration to anyone who wants to better themselves, then I feel my art accomplished its mission." If you want a great underdog success story keep your eye on Ariel Ortega, and keep your heart open to the messages portrayed through his brush strokes.

A self taught artist born in Bucharest the capital of Romania. In 2005 she graduated from the University of Bucharest with a degree in social work and then moved to England in 2007 where she started her career as an artist in 2010. www.espitiagallery.com

A restless mind / Acrylic on canvas

Ideas and Inspiration
"As a child I used to spent most of my holidays in the countryside. The love of art came to me very early in my childhood and the time spent in nature left my imagination free and enriched with the most beautiful images. I believe that art was for me a way of self-expression, an impulse to show others the different ways of rearranging my reality in my unique own order. My interest in psychology and philosophy helped me to define and express the concepts that I had developed and expressed in my artworks. Working as a social worker was an opportunity to add more depth to the image of the human feelings and ways of self-expression. For me art is my way of understanding and sharing with others the miracle of life. I believe creating is the primordial force that allows me to descend into the mysterious side of our reality and bring to the surface the unexpected aspects of objects, emotions, feelings, relations. An inspiration in my works is life itself with its mystery and miracle. Human experiences, condition and connection with nature are the main themes found in my works. I love to transform things around me, associating ideas in a metaphorical way of thinking, showing the energy that binds them together. The majority of my artworks are painted with acrylic on large scale canvas, however sometimes I use different mediums in order to build certain heavy textures. The themes of my works are mixed with a reflection of what Romanian culture has left as a finger print upon my mind and spirit".

Ship / Fotografia intervenida / 60 x 40 inches

Untitled / Fotografia intervenida / 60 x 40 inches
